DESIGN FOR TEXTILES

Beyond the Fruit Bowl

‘Beyond the Fruit Bowl’ is a collection of knitted fashion fabrics inspired by fruit and vegetables. I wanted to explore the idea of our need for perfection when it comes to shopping, and raise awareness of the issue surrounding food waste in the UK. Often imperfect, wonky produce is left behind due to our hunt for aesthetically pleasing food. This leads to increased food waste which is damaging our planet more and more every day. Throughout this project I wanted to explore the colours and textures found in unconventional fruit and vegetables. I used techniques such as partial knit to allow me to explore more three-dimensional forms. I enjoyed using different methods of fabric manipulation to produce distorted silhouettes. I also experimented with more open structures to create varying fabric weights and reflect decay.

Development samples grouped together. Different techniques and colour combinations were explored to help inform final pieces.

I chose more textured and three-dimensional techniques for the sleeve pieces. I contrasted that with using an open structure for the skirt. Top includes naturally dyed yarns made from red cabbage and turmeric.

This is one of the line ups created for my final display. Different silhouettes were explored to create a variety within the collection and showcase each design in a unique way.

This is the other line up created for my display. A different colour way was explored and new silhouettes were developed. Similar styling and certain design choices tie in with the other line up to create a more cohesive look overall.

Final wall display. Each grouping reflects a different colour exploration. Successful developments were scaled up into larger pieces that reflected decay, distortion, and unconventional forms. Visualisations accompany each design to highlight how they could sit within the fashion market.
