Hayward Scout Centre is in Gala lies on the border between the historic counties of Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire, on the Gala Water River.
This is a group project to design the interior of a 19th Century building that is used as a space for the local community, especially the Galashiels Scout Group, but also regular drama and dance groups.
The Hayward Centre is a Listed Building (category C). This means that it has been classified as of local importance. The exterior has many architectural features reflecting the Gothic style.
The building has been altered over the years and is lacking in natural light. A key part of our design must be to ensure that the interior is welcoming and attractive even though it does not have natural light.
The client is looking for a flexible solution for accommodating indoor activities as well as games, and also a neat storage solution. One potential theme they have suggested is: “Bringing the Outside In”.
