BA (HONS) DESIGN FOR TEXTILES

“Reflecting On Nature’s Eternity” – Paul Cezanne

My personal values are clearly articulated through my designs that are imaginative and applicable to the idea of a circular sustainability, my practice that is disciplined and grounded in weaving traditions, my daily life that is focused and optimistic and my learning which is lifelong.

The concept of biophilia was easily integrated within my own values system to then make a transformational impact on my design practice. Advice from a tutor to ‘go big’ was incorporated with new ‘scaling up’ techniques to produce bigger and more accomplished weave outcomes and my problem-solving skills were enhanced by the necessity to adapt practical skills to a digital format.

To ensure a wider perspective on the notion of ‘textile waste’ I envisage my future practice and product to be underpinned by the principals of heirloom and circular sustainability.

Reflects the process of experimentation in the sketchbook. New ideas where tried, different colours where introduced and new methods practised. Embroidery, painting, cutting through and resists all contributed to the development of the fabrics.

Leads closer to the concepts that will underpin the final designs. Now Jacquard weaves are added to Dobby weaves and draped images are used to bring context to the designs. Designs that target an aspirational lifestyle.

Reminds us again of the underlying values of this collection. Colours and textures reflect peace and comfort and as an antidote to the tensions of the last year. Calm in the storm is just a hug.

The image projects the luxurious quality of the final product. The washed wool now invites touch, whispers cosiness and promises warmth. Virtues that will last for generations.
