What is ‘aspetta’? You’ll often hear the word uttered with surprise or with a sense of urgency to others in the streets of Italy. Quite simply, aspetta means to wait, hold on or slow down. So, I have adopted this word, ‘Aspetta’ because this past year we have had to do just that. While the world was on pause, it forced us to slow down, to halt. We have been so still; giving us the opportunity to evaluate our lives in a way we couldn’t before. Whilst my parents were not born in Italy, as their parents did for them, they passed down unbreakable values, family traditions and a sense of belonging to the culture of such a rich country; that I know to be Italy. Due to my strong Italian heritage I have often felt removed from my Scottish environment. I struggled to find an honest connection with my surroundings, even though I’ve lived here my entire life. This project is a personal exploration of Italian heritage, uncovering the importance of community through the global pandemic.
