Lost in Traditions

‘Lost in Traditions’ is a gender-free, luxury, ready-to-wear collection for A/W 2021/22. The collection shows a range of interchangeable timeless pieces that can be seen in the wardrobe all year round. ‘Lost in Traditions’ provides versatile formal wear with a twist for the non-traditionalist ages 18-30 who goes against gender norms when dressing. The collection is inspired by the sexism and gender inequality at one of Scotland’s most historic festivals held in my hometown of Hawick. I show the importance of eliminating sexist traditions and that we should not assume modernity means gender equality by reflecting on the strict gendered roles at Hawick’s events. Deconstructing and merging the traditional dress codes seen at the events whilst paying tribute to my upbringing inspires unique shapes and untraditional tailoring. The history of women’s rights, dress codes, and generation z’s views on gender barriers are all key areas of supporting research.

This is my design mood board for my ‘Lost in Traditions’ A/W gender neutral collection. I show how merging masculinity and femininity inspired the shapes and style seen in my line up alongside inspiration from my heritage in Hawick.

This shows how I merged masculinity and femininity in the development stage. I gathered old traditional womenswear and menswear garments and initially collaged images of them. This collage work then inspired deconstructing and draping the garments on the stand to inspire unique designs for my collection.
